Challenging Youth Players

With all youth football teams, there will be some players who are more advanced in certain scenarios, while others might be striving to catch up.

Players in any given team will rarely all be at the same point in their development, whether that’s from a technical or a physical perspective.

So, a coach's job is to understand the needs of each of their players, create opportunities for them all to learn and grow and manage the differences so everyone can flourish.

Offering individual challenges within a coaching session is, therefore, an effective way of catering for all players and often enables to coach to talk individually with players without stopping the whole session.

MiMentor coach developer Jamie Godbold, a former FA Tutor, leads our online CPD course, 'The New Coach: Running Your Very First Team'.

Aimed at coaches starting out in grassroots youth football, Jamie guides them through the important steps of managing a side, from setting out a philosophy and understanding your personal motivations as a coach to developing players and managing parents.

He also helps coaches with advice around individual development challenges that enable all players to thrive.

“With all grassroots clubs, you'll have people that are forging ahead and people that are striving to keep up; they all want their own challenge to try and achieve. You want to be able to see them solving their problem and then give them the thumbs up.” says Jamie.
